This book entitled, “Speak to Conquer – Theory and Practice” is written by Malaysian authors, Dr. Elizabeth Jaya Joseph, an English lecturer and Mr. N. Subramaniyan, a lawyer. It is the only book that deals with the theoretical fundamentals of public speaking and at the same time gives a variety of 112 sample speeches for all practical occasions that aspiring speakers could emulate and learn.
In this globalized and business world, the benefits of being a successful public speaker are immense as public speaking is a form of empowerment and speaking skills and techniques can be acquired and polished.
This book is divided into 12 parts. In Part 1, a short history as well as the importance of public speaking are dealt with for the benefit of all.
In Part 2, the dual aspects of communication (verbal and non-verbal) and in Part 3, the challenging aspects of communication (conquering fright, telling stories, incorporating humour, propping the speech, handling questions and dealing with the media) are given prominence.
In Part 4, the indispensable aspects of communication (listening attentively, writing effectively, utilizing effective pauses, employing organizational patterns, inserting speech transitions, and using figures of speech and structure) and in Part 5, the different types of speeches (to inform, to persuade and inspire, to entertain, for special occasions, and for impromptu sessions) are given attention.
In Parts 6 to 10, the 112 different types of sample speeches that cover a variety of topics and themes are dealt with and each speech has a suitable introduction, solid body or development paragraphs, and an apt conclusion.
In Part 11, further aspects of communication (memory aids, A-Z of tips, highlights of public speaking, remedies for bloopers, checklists, poetic power, and quotable quotes) and in Part 12, miscellaneous aspects (epilogue, references and websites) are given.
This book is recommended to all who are interested in acquiring public speaking or speech communication skills especially those who want to read a variety of sample speeches (some of which have won speech competitions) that can be a springboard to writing their own speeches.
