This book entitled, “Poetic Potpourri 2 – Expressing sentiments” is a Malaysian effort by Dr. Elizabeth Jaya Joseph, who has been passionate about poetic verses since her school days. It is a collection of 214 closed and open poetic verses. The poems, which are intended to educate and entertain, cover a wide variety of themes and topics of general interest.
Poetry, a rhythmical concoction of words can express and arouse a multitude of emotions and touch the inner crevices of the mind. There is indeed something about poetic verses that can go deep and touch the soul and fill it with a warm glow that can be soothing and haunting at the same time. Some have said that reading verse is like traversing the rich vegetation of the tropics where lush flora and fauna are intriguing.
In Chapter 1 of this book, the Closed verses cover topics such as Creatures, Education, Family, Friends, Life, Nature, Romance, Tragedy, and Unclassified.
In Chapter 2 of this book, the Open verses cover topics such as Country, Destiny, Flower, Misfortune, Motivation, Mystery, Nature, People, and Relationship.
The poetic verses that are written for all interested readers are personal poems that are mainly reflections on observed reality.
The integration of the physical (sound), intellectual (meaning), and emotional (response) aspects especially in literary verse can intensify language development in myriad ways such as: communication is improved, vocabulary in increased, thought is refined, knowledge is widened, humanity is understood, visualization is magnified, imagination is enriched, senses are heightened, confidence is built, curiosity is piqued, and empathy is cultivated.
This book is recommended for all adults especially Literature students and lecturers at the tertiary level.
